Just wondering if there's any restriction on using VM's for the target machines.

No restriction whatsoever! Our Delphix Landshark environment ships with vm's for the sources and targets.

    Hi Johnston,
Absolutely, Delphix has no restrictions here.
In fact we have assisted customers in doing this to help with performance.
With a dedicated ESX host with enough memory and CPU to not be over committed. Customers have created a DE and then one or more target servers on the same ESX host for that one DE. (This host is dedicated to only these guests and resources are not over committed.) This has helped customers achieve some impressive performance numbers running VDB databases.
Running on adjacent blades is also beneficial as well as long as the ESX hosts are not over committed etc.
Here is a link to our docs that discuss VMWare setup for a DE: http://docs.delphix.com/display/DOCS42/Virtual+Machine+Requirements+for+VMWare+Platform
    I hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Dave G.
