  • 1.  SQL Server on Azure: Ingesting Managed Instance SQL DB

    Posted 08-22-2024 03:49:00 AM

    Hi everyone,

Is there a way direct or workaround to ingest a database running on an SQL Server on Azure Managed Instance?

Has anyone tried or worked on this?

    Thanks,

    Hi Rahim,

This is being discussed internally, and I or someone else from the team will let you know the outcome of those discussion. It may well be an enhancement request.
That said, I did not want you to think this was being ignored or forgotten.

    Best regards,
    Michael

    Hi Rahim,

Technically, many SQL Managed Instance database backups will be compatible with SQL Server 2022 (see Restoring a SQL Managed Instance database backup to SQL Server 2022 now GA), and it may be possible to restore these using the Staging Push feature.

There are several complexities about SQL Managed Instances that might make this difficult. For example, in some cases it will not be possible for the Staging and Target Environments to access the TDE Encryption Key that is being used to encrypt the data. It may also be possible for customers to upgrade their SQL Managed Instances in a way that is no longer compatible with any current on-premise version of SQL Server.

While it might already be possible to implement this using our Staging Push functionality, I've raised a request with our product managers to explore this further. Please follow up via your Customer Success or Channel partners at Delphix if you need assistance investigating this.

    Hi Nathan,

Thanks for the answer on the question.

As far as I see, this option has not been tried by any customers, so we don't have the experience or documentation on how to perform such an operation end-to-end.

I am guessing that it will take some more time while the Delphix Community evolves and changes and become a place where the experience will be shared more by Delphix users/community, not just the Delphix staff (while I appreciate you guys' support at most, having an active community would make it easier for all of us in the long run).

    Hi Rahim,

To your second point, the expansion of our community's activity and engagement, please be sure you are sharing the community with your customers and your colleagues. The grassroots movement and the ability to get our message out to our practitioners can only benefit from our partners lending us a hand. We are more than happy to host success stories along with sticking points. The more stories we have, the more discussions and q/a with our members we can highlight, encourage, and, ultimately, continue building a stronger, more engaged community.

    Thanks!

    Michael

    Hi Michael,

You're exactly right and I am doing so. I am sure that we all realize that building a community is hard work and time consuming; I would like to use this post and thank everyone for being part of this community.
